Welcome to our guide on how to see if your SEO strategy is making an impact.
SEO can feel like shouting into the void sometimes. You’ve done the keyword research, written the content, and fixed your meta tags. But how do you know if any of it’s actually paying off?
Our team at Appsecute has helped Brisbane businesses climb the search engine rankings for years. We know some metrics look good but don’t mean much, so we’re writing this guide to help you understand what’s really working.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
- The signs your SEO strategy is on the right track
- How bounce rate affects SEO performance
- How to track results in Google Search Console and Google Analytics
Read on to find out where you stand and what to do from here.
What Are the Signs Your SEO Strategy Is Working?

The signs your SEO strategy is working include rising organic traffic and higher keyword rankings. There are also other signs, like improved click-through rate (CTR), more conversions, and new backlinks from other websites.
Let’s break each sign down:
- Organic Traffic Growth: This number refers to users who find your site through organic search results each month, and Google Analytics shows this data clearly. A consistent rising trend over 3-6 months confirms your SEO performance is heading in the right direction.
- Keyword Ranking Improvements: Your web pages should be climbing higher in search engine results pages. Say you were stuck on page two for “Brisbane electrician” last month, and now you’re at position 7. You can measure this progress in Google Search Console.
- Click-Through Rate (CTR): A higher CTR suggests your title tag and meta description are doing their job. It’s because searchers see your listing and choose to click, which often means your content looks relevant to their query.
- Conversions From Search: Traffic alone doesn’t make money, so the goal should be to get organic traffic that leads to sales, enquiries, or sign-ups. Google Analytics lets you track those actions and see which search visitors actually convert.
- New Backlinks: When other websites link to your content, Google sees it as a trust signal. In particular, high-quality backlinks from relevant sites boost your search engine rankings over time. You can check the “Links” report in Google Search Console to see who’s linking to you.
If you notice that these areas are trending up, it means your SEO efforts are paying off.
How Does Bounce Rate Affect SEO Performance?

Bounce rate affects SEO performance because it gives Google a clue about how useful your page feels to visitors. When someone clicks your listing and leaves instantly, that’s a bounce. And a high bounce rate over time can signal to Google that your content isn’t meeting users’ information-seeking habits.
We’ll now explain the impact of bounce rates on your SEO performance.
Low Engagement Signals Poor Content Match
Have you even checked your analytics and noticed that visitors are spending only a few seconds on your page? That indicates a high bounce rate (and it’s a huge red flag).
A high bounce rate usually means your content didn’t match what users were searching for. Maybe your title tag promised one thing, but the page delivered something else.
Recently, we diagnosed this issue on one of our new clients’ existing pages. It was getting a ranking for “how to fix a leaking tap”, but only included a brief paragraph instead of actual steps. So what actually happened is that visitors landed on the site, scanned the page, and left instantly.
Google’s algorithm noticed this pattern and started questioning whether our client’s content deserves that top spot. But if users stay longer, the signal changes, and this is what we’ll talk about next.
Pro tip: Look at exit pages in Analytics to see where users give up, then tighten or reorder that section.
High Time on Page Shows Relevance
When users spend more time on your page, search engines see your content as relevant and helpful. Specifically, longer engagement time means users interact with your content, scroll through it, and actually read what you’ve written.
Google Analytics tracks it as “average engagement time” in GA4. And the longer people stick around, the more Google trusts that your page delivers value.
So if you want better SEO performance, focus on creating content that keeps visitors engaged from the first line to the last.
How Do You Track SEO Performance?

You track SEO performance using free tools like Google Search Console for rankings and Google Analytics for traffic and user behaviour data. Both tools give you direct access to the numbers that show whether your strategy is working.
The best part is they’re completely free!
How about we explain how these two tools work?
Google Search Console (GSC)
Google Search Console gives you direct data on how your site performs in Google search results. It shows your clicks, impressions, and search engine rankings for every keyword your site appears for.
You can also see which search terms bring users to your site, which is truly important for refining your content strategy (it tells you what people are precisely looking for).
Apart from rankings data, GSC flags technical issues, too. They show you broken links, indexing problems, and crawl errors. That means if something is hurting your SEO performance behind the scenes, Search Console will let you know about it.
We highly recommend checking it at least once a week to find and deal with these problems.
Google Analytics (GA or GA4)
Organic traffic is one of the most valuable data points for measuring SEO success, and that’s what you get with Google Analytics. As we mentioned earlier (partially), it tracks where your visitors come from, how long they stay, and what they do on your site.
Not only that, but you can also see which web pages drive conversions from search visitors and which ones need work.
From our experience, the “Traffic Acquisition” report is the best place to start. It breaks down your organic traffic clearly. You can also break results down by device to see how mobile visitors behave, which is important since a large share of searches now happens on phones.
Useful tip: Track scroll depth events on organic sessions to see if users actually reach your main content.
What Should You Do If SEO Isn’t Showing Results?

If SEO isn’t showing results, you should review your keyword targeting, audit on-page SEO, and check for technical issues. You should also allow more time before making any changes. SEO is a long game, so panicking after a few weeks won’t help anyone.
Here’s what to look at first:
- Review Keyword Targeting: You need to ensure that you’re targeting relevant keywords that people actually search for. Use free tools like Ubersuggest to check search volume. Your content should match what users expect to find when they click.
- Audit On-Page SEO: Your title tags, meta tags, and heading tags should be clear and relevant to the page. So it’s a good idea to check that your content answers the query directly. Sometimes rankings are delayed just because these basics are off.
- Check Technical Issues: Head into Google Search Console and look for broken links or indexing problems. These issues can block Google from seeing your pages. Plus, a slow or non-mobile-friendly site hurts your rankings, too.
- Allow More Time: Believe it or not, SEO usually takes three to six months to show real progress. Since Google adjusts rankings over time, it makes more sense to watch monthly trends instead of worrying about daily changes.
If you cover these points, you’re building a stronger SEO foundation.
Your Next Steps for Better SEO Results
You now know the signs that show your SEO strategy is actually working. Growing organic traffic, better keyword rankings, improved CTR, and new backlinks all point to progress. And if things aren’t moving, you’ve got a checklist to work through before making any serious changes.
It’s important to track the right data and give it enough time. Look, SEO isn’t a quick fix, but when it works, it brings in customers month after month without paying for ads.
